Meta makes money almost entirely one way: it sells ads in Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp. In the third quarter of 2026, advertising brought in $63.1 billion of Meta’s $64.6 billion in revenue, or 97.6%. Everything else Meta does, from Quest headsets to its AI models, adds up to the other 2.4%.

Every number on this page comes from Meta’s own quarterly earnings releases filed with the SEC. Where I add quarters together into a trailing-twelve-month figure, or divide one line by another, I say so, because Meta doesn’t publish those views.

Meta’s revenue in the last twelve months

Meta reports two segments: Family of Apps (Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and other services) and Reality Labs (virtual and augmented reality hardware, software and content). Inside Family of Apps it splits advertising from “other revenue”. Adding up the four most recent quarters (Q4 2025 through Q3 2026) gives $241.6 billion:

How each line makes money

Advertising: more ads, at higher prices

Businesses buy ads through one system and Meta places them across its apps. Meta doesn’t say how much each app earns, so any per-app split you see elsewhere is an estimate.

What Meta does report is why the line grew. In Q3 2026, ad impressions across the Family of Apps rose 10% year over year and the average price per ad rose 14%. Both moved up at once, which is how ad revenue grew 26%. In Q4 2025 it was the other way round: impressions grew 18% and price 6%.

For an advertiser, the price figure is the one to watch. A 14% rise in average price per ad means the same budget bought fewer impressions than a year earlier, on average across Meta.

Other revenue: the small Family of Apps line

Meta’s segment table puts $1.1 billion of “other revenue” next to advertising in Q3 2026, up 59% from $0.69 billion. The release doesn’t itemize it. It’s still under 2% of revenue.

Reality Labs: a cost center that sells hardware

Reality Labs sold $443 million of hardware, software and content in Q3 2026 and lost $4.1 billion at the operating line. Over the last twelve months it took in $2.2 billion and lost $18.8 billion.

Meta expects Reality Labs to lose $18 billion to $19 billion in 2026, down from $19.2 billion in 2025, and says it expects losses “to narrow next year to around $15 billion as we reallocate investment toward other priority areas, primarily AI.”

Growth: revenue up 24% to 33% every quarter

Here is total revenue growth over the last four quarters, compared with the same quarter a year earlier:

  • Q4 2025 ($59.9B)+24%

  • Q3 2026 ($64.6B)+26%

Meta guided Q4 2026 revenue to $73 billion to $76 billion. If it lands there, 2026 revenue will be roughly $255 billion to $258 billion, against $201.0 billion in 2025.

Revenue is the easy part of Meta’s 2026. Spending is the story.

$34.9Bcapital expenditures in Q3 2026
$20.1Bresearch and development in Q3 2026, up 32%
$9.9BQ3 charge for the attorneys general settlement
  • Data centers. Capital expenditures, including finance lease payments, were $34.9 billion in Q3 2026. Meta expects $135 billion to $145 billion for the year, roughly double 2025’s $72.2 billion. Free cash flow was negative $2.1 billion in the quarter, even with $32.8 billion of operating cash flow.
  • AI models. Mark Zuckerberg’s quote in the Q3 release cites the launch of “Muse and Muse Wonder, our first frontier model.” The company says its AI investments “are already delivering substantial incremental advertising revenue through stronger engagement, better recommendations, and more efficient monetization.”
  • Legal costs. In August 2026 Meta agreed with 52 state attorneys general to resolve teen mental health litigation, with payments of up to about $18.59 billion. Q3 included a $9.89 billion charge for it, which cut operating margin to 20% from 40% a year earlier. Without the charge, Meta says operating income would have been $22.88 billion. Q2 2026 also carried $2.40 billion of legal charges and $1.18 billion of severance from a May 2026 headcount reduction.

Headcount was 66,775 on September 30, 2026, down 15% from a year earlier.

Meta vs Google: two ad businesses, different shapes

Meta is roughly half Alphabet’s size by revenue: $241.6 billion against $471.1 billion over the same twelve months. By ad revenue the gap is smaller. Alphabet’s Search, YouTube and Network ads added up to $323.2 billion, so Meta’s ad business was about 73% of Google’s.

The difference is concentration. Ads were 97.6% of Meta’s Q3 2026 revenue and 64.3% of Alphabet’s, where Google Cloud has become a second engine. My Alphabet revenue breakdown has those figures line by line.

Meta’s full-year 2025 numbers

For anyone who needs calendar-year figures, here is 2025 from the Q4 2025 earnings release:

Line20242025Change
Advertising$160.6B$196.2B+22%
Other revenue$1.7B$2.6B+50%
Reality Labs revenue$2.1B$2.2B+3%
Total revenue$164.5B$201.0B+22%
Family of Apps operating income$87.1B$102.5B+18%
Reality Labs operating loss−$17.7B−$19.2B
Net income$62.4B$60.5B−3%

Family daily active people, Meta’s count of unique people using at least one of its apps each day, averaged 3.58 billion in December 2025 and 3.64 billion in September 2026.

What this means if you buy Meta ads

  • Expect prices to keep rising. Average price per ad rose 14% year over year in Q3 2026. Budget for higher costs per result, and judge campaigns on profit per customer.
  • Reach is growing slower than ad load. Daily active people grew 3% while impressions grew 10%, so growth comes from more ads per person and higher prices. Your ads compete for the same people more often, which puts the weight on creative.
  • Ads fund everything else. At 97.6% of revenue, the ad business pays for the AI build-out and Reality Labs, so Meta’s spending plans rest on advertisers’ budgets.

Meta revenue FAQ

How much of Meta’s revenue comes from ads?

97.6% in Q3 2026: $63.1 billion of $64.6 billion. Over the twelve months to September 30, 2026, advertising was $235.6 billion of $241.6 billion, or 97.5%.

How much does Reality Labs lose?

Reality Labs lost $19.2 billion in 2025 and $4.1 billion in Q3 2026. Meta expects a 2026 loss of $18 billion to $19 billion and about $15 billion in 2027.

Does Meta break out revenue for Instagram or WhatsApp?

No. Meta reports advertising for the Family of Apps as a whole, so figures for Instagram, Facebook or WhatsApp alone are third-party estimates.

Why did Meta’s profit fall in Q3 2026 when revenue grew 26%?

Costs rose 68%, mainly because of a $9.89 billion charge for the settlement with state attorneys general, plus higher research and development and infrastructure spending. Operating income fell 37% to $13.0 billion; net income still rose because the year-earlier quarter carried a large tax charge.

What is Meta’s revenue forecast for Q4 2026?

Meta guided Q4 2026 revenue to $73 billion to $76 billion in its Q3 release.
