What is llms.txt?

A proposed standard: a Markdown file at /llms.txt that gives AI engines a clean, curated map of your site — a title, a one-line summary, and lists of your most important URLs with short descriptions. Think of it as robots.txt for meaning rather than crawling, or a sitemap written for a reader instead of a parser.

Where do I put the file?

At the root of your domain: https://yoursite.com/llms.txt. Optionally also publish /llms-full.txt with the full text of your key pages inlined. Both should return Content-Type text/plain or text/markdown.

Does llms.txt actually move citations?

Accepted Answer

It is not yet honored by every major engine, and on its own it will not make an uncited site cited. But it is cheap to add, it cannot hurt, and it cleanly signals your canonical pages. Treat it as table stakes, not a silver bullet — the heavy lifting is still strong, well-structured content.

Per the spec, links under an "## Optional" heading can be skipped by a model working under a tight context budget. Put your nice-to-have pages there; keep your essential pages in the named sections above it.
